The covenant that God made with David in II Samuel 7:12-16 characterizes how scripture is viewed through the remainder of the Old Testament and even all the way down through the first century A.D. When Jesus came as the Messiah ("Christ" means "Messiah"), the people immediately associated his ministry with the fulfillment of these Old Testament prophecies. You can't understand the ministry of Jesus without understanding the implications of these prophecies. You will see from these verses that the people had every expectation that Jesus was there to physically set up the Messianic Kingdom on earth according to prophecy.
